Installation Instructions
Parts
- Ideal Deluxe Pet Door
Tools
- Scissors
- Hammer and awl/nail
- Drill and a 3/8” bit
- Saber saw
- Phillips screwdriver
Please read instructions & notes thoroughly before installation.
Step 1 Determine Template Placement
- Using scissors, cut the template along the dotted lines as indicated.
- Center the template (width) in the middle of door and tape in place.
- Position the top of the template 2" taller than your pet's shoulder.
Step 2 Outline the Pet Door Opening
- With the template taped in place, use a pencil to draw around the inside edge of the template onto the door.
- Use a nail or awl to mark the inside edge corner holes and outer hardware drill holes.
Step 3 Drill the Holes
- Drill four 3/8” in diameter individual holes (the inside edge corner locations will serve as a guide).
- Next, drill the 3/8” diameter outer door hardware holes.
Step 4 Cut the Opening
- Begin with one of the inside edge corner holes.
- Using a saber saw, carefully cut along the pencil line.
Step 5 Install the Frames
- Insert the outer frame (A) (no flap) into the opening from the exterior side. Make sure that the frame is flush with the door surface.
- No adjustment is necessary if the frame does not extend beyond the interior opening. If part of the outer frame extends into the interior, remove the "break-off" levels on the outer frame (B) as required.
- Use pliers to break off a single level at a time starting at the top, proceeding with the bottom and the sides. Start at the corner and bend the metal inward toward the center in 2" intervals.
- Caulking is recommended under the outer frame. Place the inner frame (C) (with flap) into the opening from the inside of the door and hold in place. Insert the binder posts (D) through the exterior frame, then install the screws (E) and tighten until snug.
For Doors with Uneven Surfaces
After making the rough cut-out, build up the lowest area with a wood frame thick enough to make an even door surface. If both sides of your door are uneven, repeat the process for the other side. Then proceed with the steps above.
For Walls: Once an opening has been made in the wall, it is necessary to build a frame to cover the exposed area between the wall surfaces. Use wood screws to attach the interior and exterior frames to the wall surfaces. When cutting through walls, make sure not to cut any concealed electric wires, gas lines, or water pipes.
Steel Doors: To create an opening in a steel door, use a jigsaw with a hacksaw blade to cut the opening, starting at the pre-drilled corner holes. Then proceed with the steps above.
Storm Doors ½” or Less in Width: Starting at any pre-drilled corner hole, use tin snips to cut out the rough opening. Break off levels 1 and 2 (B) as required (see Diagram 1). Then proceed with the steps above.
