Step 1 Outline the Template
- Determine the location of the pet door you are going to install on the door by drawing a 7 ¼" horizontal line on the door equal to the height of your cat at the shoulders.
- Now draw a vertical 7 ¼" line that goes directly through the center mark of your first line (should look like this +). Again, use a level to make sure that it is straight and accurate.
- Take off the door by removing the hinge pins. Put the door on a raised level surface, like a work bench or saw horses.
- Place the template included on top of the lines drawn matching them up and trace around the template. Tape the template down to hole it in place with painters tape. Once the line is drawn remove the template. Use the level to make sure all lines are accurate.
Step 2 Drill the Holes
- Next you will need to drill ½" diameter holes in the 4 corners of the line you traced for the cut out.
Step 3 Make the Cutout
- Now cut out the opening for the pet door using a jigsaw.
- Making sure that the blade used is correct for the material your door is made of.
- Now do a quick check to make sure that the cat door inside frame into the opening. Then do the same with the outside frame.
Step 4 Drill the Remaining Holes
- Once the fit is checked center the inside frame into the cut out and mark the screw holes with a pencil then remove the frame.
- Next you will need to drill holes for the screws.
- If your door is wood the holes should be 5/64" and if your door is metal 7/64".
Step 5 Attach the Frames
- Place the inside frame back on the door and use a screwdriver to attach it.
- Take the outside frame and peel back one side of the double sided tape and stick it to the back of the frame.
- Last remove the other liner from the tape and stick the outside frame onto the door, and push to secure it in place.
FAQ
What is the Basic? That is the door whose magnetic closure has a lock that will allow you to either lock the door completely or leave it open so the pet can go in and out. |
What is the Deluxe? This cat flap door has a 4-way lock, which has four settings: closed both ways, open both ways, outside access only, inside access only. |
Can you get the door in any other colors? The PetSafe Cat Flap comes only in white, but you can paint it to any color you desire. |
Will this door be durable? The Pet safe cat flap is intended to be an economical option. However, cats tend to be more gentle than dogs, and interior doors often last longer than exterior doors. |
How do I know my kitty will fit through it? Make hole 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" in a piece cardboard and see if they can get through. This door only comes in one size, so there are no large cat door options for this type. |
Would this work on pleixglass or plywood? Yes, you can use it on thin materials. However, you will need a specialty cat door if you want to install it into a screen door. |
Are there doors that would go better in an exterior application? Something similar would be the Ideal 4-way Locking Cat Door or the Cat Mate 221 Cat Door. |
Would this be easy to install? It is meant to be a fairly simple DIY project, but it does require using a jigsaw so you do have to be handy. |
Can you get replacement parts? Yes, but they are only available through PetSafe directly. |
Is this available in a larger flap? Not this model, which is made for small pets only. However, there are other indoor cat door options that are similar, like the Cat Mate 221 Cat Door that have a larger flap. |
Will installing this damage my door? Unfortunately, there is no way to install a cat flap without damaging doors. However, there are sash window options that may work better for you. They insert straight into the sash window and require very little installation. They are another great option for giving certain pets exclusive access to the cat litter box. |
What should i buy if i want cheap cat flaps? The PetSafe Cat Flap is a good budget choice, especially for those looking for a four-way locking cat flap to block off their cat litter. It is a very good product and pretty easy for your cat to get accustomed to it. While it is not the most durable on the market, it is definitely affordable and good for first-time pet parents who do now know how their cat will react to a new door. |
I want my cat to have their own entrance, but I don't want a cat door. What are my options? The Cathole Interior Pet Door is one of the best cat doors for blocking off your cat's litter box. Unlike microchip cat flaps and other dog doors, this door is lined with a grooming brush that cuts down on your cat's shedding. However, since it is literally a hole without a door, it is not weatherproof and is not recommended for use as an exterior cat door. |
