Step 1 Choose Pet Door Placement
- Before installation, choose where to place the pet door. The pet door can be placed in the left, center or right side of the door.
Step 2 Mark Pet Height
- It is important to measure the placement on the door specifically for your pet’s height. If there are multiple pets, measure to the largest pet.
- Mark the shoulder height of your pet with a pencil on the chosen door side.
- Use a level to draw a vertical line through the shoulder height line.
Step 3 Prepare Door
- Remove the door from hinges using the flat-head screwdriver and hammer.
- Place the door on a raised level surface, such as a pair of saw horses.
Step 4 Prepare Cutout Template
- Cut the template to the correct size according to the pet door.
- Match the marked lines on the door with the shoulder and center lines on the template.
Step 5 Outline Template
- Make sure the template is at least three inches from the bottom and sides of the door.
- Tape the template to the door and trace the template completely. Make sure to trace under the tape to connect the corners.
Step 6 Cut the Opening
- Drill 3/8 inch holes on the inside corners of the drawn template. Hold the drill steady and straight.
- Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole, making sure the blade goes entirely through the door, and cut along the drawn template lines.
- Continue until an opening is made.
Step 7 Check Frame Fit
- Place the interior frame into the opening to check the fit.
- Place the exterior frame under the door while holding the interior frame with one hand.
Step 8 Drill Holes
- With only the interior frame in the opening, mark the door through the screw holes along the side of the frame.
- Remove the interior frame and drill ¼ inch holes through the door.
Step 9 Position Frames
- Place the interior frame with the flap into the cutout on top of the door.
- Place the exterior frame into the cutout from beneath the door. Ensure the exterior frame fits into the interior frame.
- Hold both frames in place for the rest of the steps.
Step 10 Insert Screws
- Insert the nylon screws into the holes in the frame.
- Caulk around the exterior frame and inside where the frames meet for extra weatherproofing.
Step 11 Install Hex Nuts
- Twist the hex nuts on the bottom of each screw. Pull the screw up until the hex nut is flush with the exterior frame.
- Tighten the screws until a small part of each screw remains on the top of the frame.
Step 12 Tighten Screws
- Tighten each screw evenly throughout the frame until snug.
- Cut off the excess screw using wire cutters. A metal file can be used to smooth any rough edges of the screw.
