Product Details
Designed for both single-pane and double-pane glass doors, this innovative pet door allows your furry friends to come and go as they please without compromising the space and functionality of your sliding glass door or hinged door.
The Hale pet door is specifically designed for glass doors, offering a space-saving alternative to traditional panel pet doors. With eleven different sizes available, this pet door accommodates pets of various breeds and sizes. The extruded aluminum frame and steel-reinforced corners provide exceptional stability, ensuring long-lasting durability and performance.
To Complete your order, you will fill out a short electronic survey (link on your order confirmation email) and need to know the following before we can begin building your pet door:
- Single pane glass must be no more than 3/16" thick and comes with only one flap
- Double pane glass (single pane over 3/16" thick) has your choice of 1 or 2 flaps
- Glass thickness is needed, should not be an estimate, because this will determine if your installation needs build outs or comp strips
- Type of door being installed in (if sliding glass door, will need to know if the slider, slides inside or outside the fixed, non-operational panel)
Glazier Required for Installation: Because existing tempered glass cannot be cut, this application requires replacing the entire pane of glass. Glass cutting, tempering, and installing a dog door in a glass door require a glass professional. It is always best to have the pet door in hand before ordering the glass so that you have the exact dimensions needed.
Single-Pane Model: Fits tempered safety glass up to 3/16" and comes with a single flap only. If you have single-pane glass over 3/16" thick, you will need to order the double-pane model. Includes Comp Strips.
Double-Pane Model: Fits glass thickness from 1/4" to 1-3/8". Can be used in glass thicknesses 1-3/8 to 2" thick with a build-out that will be included in the order. The standard order of this model comes with double flaps and an interior security cover, but it can be ordered with a single flap. Includes Comp Strips and Buildout.
Please Note: For sliding glass doors that slide inside the fixed panel, the pet door should be placed on the slider. For sliding glass doors that slide outside the fixed panel, the pet door should be placed on the fixed panel. This is to ensure the slider is able to fully open and not blocked by the lock or potential build-out.
Warning: Thermo-Tru brand sliding glass doors require a specialized glazier for installation. Make sure you do not have a Therma-Tru pet door before purchasing.

Installation Instructions
Please Note: This installation is to be done by a professional glazer. Please reference the full in the glass instructions here for more details.
Parts
- Hale Through the Glass Kit
Tools
- WD-40
- Drill and Bits
- Large Drop Cloth
- De-burring Tool
- Caulk Gun
- Phillips Screwdriver
- 4 Short Pieces of 2x2
- Rubber Mallet
- Paper Towels
- Clear Silicone Caulk
Step 1 Prepare for Installation
- Before installation, measure the glass to be sure the replacement glass you have is the right size.
- Ask the customer if the pet door is to be installed in the sliding panel or the stationary panel. Take into consideration to which side any blinds or drapes pull and whether or not they will interfere with the pet door. If the sliding panel is on the inside and the stationary panel is on the outside. explain to the customer that the slider will only open up to the edge of the pet door, meaning that there will be a loss of door space equal to the width of the pet door.
- Lay a large drop cloth down over the area in which you will be working. The larger the drop cloth the better. If the glass breaks while you are working a large drop cloth will catch most of it, making cleanup much quicker and easier. Put two pieces of 2 x 2 on the cloth so you can rest the door on them while you work.
- Before starting work, test the door carefully. See how it slides, if the lock works, etc. If you notice anything wrong, bring it to the customer's attention before starting work!
Step 2 Take the Slider Out of the Track
- Most Sliding glass doors have the slider on the inside. If the pet door is going to be installed in the slider, you will usually have to remove the stationary panel in order to remove the slider.
- Before doing so, try to lift the slider out from inside the house. Occasionally one will lift out, saving installation time. If you do have to remove the stationary panel, remove any securing screws or brackets and slide the stationary panel over far enough to get a grip on both edges.
- Lift it out of the track and set it somewhere out of the way. Lift the slider out of the track.
Step 3 Remove the Screws
- Set the panel you are going to work on edgewise on the 2 x 2's.
- There should be two screws on each edge, one at the top and one at the bottom, holding the frame together.
- Remove the bottom screw from the corner opposite of where the pet door will go. Flip the panel over onto the other edge and remove the top screw.
- Pull the frame loose from the glass.
- Strike the end of the Side frame with your mallet to loosen the end frame from the glass.
- You should now have half the frame off the glass in an "L" shape. Flip the panel over and repeat. Now you should have a sheet of glass with a rubber gasket around it.
Step 4 Set the Glass to the Side
- Set glass off to the side on the second pair of 2 x 2'3. Save the gasket! You will re-use it on the new glass.
Step 5 Bring in the New Glass
- Bring in the new glass. Set it on the 2 x 2'5 with the corner notch up.
- Test fit the pet door onto the glass. Make sure you have the inside of the pet door on the inside surface of the glass.
Step 6 Apply Silicone
- If everything fits, remove the pet door and put a head of silicone in the groove. Go all the way around the door.
- The silicone will glue the pet door to the glass and form a cushion between the metal door and the glass.
- If you do not apply silicone the pet door will rattle on the glass and possibly ca use the glass to break. Put the comp strips in the grooves and put the gasket around the glass.
Step 7 Apply WD-40
- Spray some WD—40® on a folded paper towel and wipe the gasket thoroughly.
- Wipe the doorframe where it fits over the gasket. This will make it much easier to put the frame on.
Step 8 Place Frame Back on Glass
- Place the frame back on the glass.
- Set it on as straight as you can and tap it onto the glass with the rubber mallet. Flip the panel over and repeat.
- Put the screws back in.
Step 9 Put the Door back in the Track
- Check the wheels. Do they roll well? Clean them up and lubricate them with WD—40®. Before re-assembling the door, vacuum out the wheel track and wipe it down with WD-40®.
- Put the door back in the track. If it is the sliding panel, check to see how it rolls and locks.
- Re—assemble the entire door. Put any screws or brackets back in place. Put the screen doors back on.
Step 10 Attach the Pin Lock
- Attach the pin lock to the door. To avoid drilling into the patio door frame when installing the pin lock, study the illustration above. Place the security cover in the pet door.
- Drill a 5/16“ hole in the fluting very close to the security cover. Drill into the security cover. Remove the security cover and finish drilling the hole. Enlarge the hole in the security cover with a 3/8" bit. Scrape the shavings and rough edges of the hole with the de-burring tool.
- Put the security cover back in the pet door and hold up a pin lock to the door so the pin sticks through the fluting and into the security cover. Drill out two small holes for the small screws with a 7/64" drill bit. Use the slots in the pin lock for a template. Screw the pin lock into place. Test the lock and adjust it if needed. Clean the area around the glass and you are finsihed.
FAQ
Can I just cut my existing glass? If you have dual pane or tempered glass you will need to have a local glass shop make a piece of glass with a notch, as you can't cut that without it shattering. |
Can this door go into a slider? It is possible, however, it will stick out so there may not be enough clearance for the sliding door to open all the way. We recommend that the doors be installed in swinging doors or sidelights. |
Do I need to hire an installer? Yes, we highly recommend having a professional do the installation. |
Is the pet door clear? The flap is a clear flexible vinyl with magnets and weather stripping to help seal it up. The more insulating double flap option is only available if you have dual pane glass. |
Why do you need my exact glass thickness? The manufacturer will include a build-out for anything other than 3/16" and they send the proper one out depending on the thickness. |
My glass is single pane, but it is not 3/16"? In that case, you must order the double-pane version and specify your exact thickness. |
Does this come with a cover? Yep, it will come with a cover to close off the dog door when not in use. |
Can small and large pets share this door? Yes, this is a great door for multiple size pets to use. |
Are replacement parts available? Yes, you can find them here. |
Is there a warranty? Hale offers a 5-year pro-rated warranty. |
How much does shipping cost? Shipping is calculated at checkout. |
