What Is a French Bulldog's Temperament?
French bulldogs are one of the world’s most popular small dog breeds. They can always be found living among urbanites who need a good companion for their tight living spaces. With their iconic bat-like ears and square head, a French bulldog can be recognized a mile away.
If you’re considering adopting a French bulldog as a new member of your family, you should first make sure that a French bulldog’s temperament matches what you’re looking for as a pet.
What Are Dog Temperaments?
A dog’s temperament are common personality traits and physical needs that are common in every member of a certain breed. Because purebred dogs were bred with specific traits or tasks in mind, every dog with that breed’s ancestry can be expected to all share these traits.
For example, a dog from a breed raised for hunting can be expected to be high energy and their owner can expect needed to give them a lot of physical exercise everyday. However, a dog that were bred to be lapdogs will not need the same amount of exercise daily.
This is what makes mutts so both so unique and challenging! Because they are a blend of two or more breeds, you never know what their temperaments will be. Often, mutts from the same litter will even have exact opposite needs. This means that every mutt you meet is wholly unique, but it can be hard to know for certain what kind of dog you’re going to get.
A breed’s temperament is not a guarantee of your dog’s personality. While a dog breed can be well known for being playful or smart, personal experience plays a huge role as well. Any dog that is mistreated will be unfriendly no matter how great the breed generally is for families. A dog that has been poorly socialized will not get along with other dog no matter how layback their breed is.
French Bulldog Temperament and Personality
While every French bulldog is different, they are known for being great for families, very playful, very adaptable, and having mild energy levels.
Other great traits include:
- Great For Families: French bulldogs are not only very affectionate with family members, but they are very tolerant and patient with children. You can depend on the family bulldog to be friendly with your child with minimal supervision just as much as you can depend on them to want to cuddle and be your best friend.
- Very Playful: French bulldogs are an extremely enthusiastic breed. Even past puppyhood, they still want to play all of the games they grew up playing. You can always depend on a French bulldog to want to have a good time.
- Very Adaptable: Some dogs thrive in routine and hate experiencing any kind of changes in their living conditions. Not French bulldogs. They do well with any kind of variations in their daily lives. Plus, you can depend on them to be friendly with any new dogs or people they meet. They are a social breed who you can depend on to remain calm and friendly when making a new friend.
- Mild Energy Levels: While French bulldogs are playful, they are not extremely energetic, especially when compared to breeds raised for hunting or herding. They still need time every day to do some exercise to stay healthy and happy, but you are not going to have to exhaust them with extreme sports to keep them in good health.
If a French bulldog seems like the right dog for we, we highly recommend adopting from a shelter instead of buying from a breeder. Shelter dogs are always in need of a loving family, and there are plenty of rescues that specialize in specific dog breeds.
