Do Dogs Have Belly Buttons?

Even if you are a life-long dog lover, you may be surprised to learn that dogs have belly buttons, just like humans. Like most other mammals, their belly button (also known as the umbilicus) is a residual scar from where the placenta of the mother is attached to the puppy in the womb.

When a puppy is born, they are usually still in their sac of fluid. Their mother will typically break the sac themselves. They will also chew off the umbilical cord about an inch or two from the puppy’s belly, with the remaining parts drying up and falling off within a few days.

However, while dogs technically have belly buttons, they are difficult to see.

Is My Dog An Outie Or An Innie?

“Outie or Innue” is a very common question for humans. But don’t expect to get any solid answers from a dog owner.

Unlike humans, a dog’s belly button is not a hole in the dog’s stomach. Instead, it is often a flat scar. But while an unnoticeable scar is common, it is not the only form their belly button can take. Some variations include a belly button that looks like a wrinkle, an oval, or a rosette scar. In short. your dog is neither an innie or outie.

If your dog has any kind of protrusion in his stomach area that looks like a human belly button, then you should take them to the veterinarian. While it may look like an outie belly button, it is far more likely a hernia that needs to be immediately treated.

Hernias can occur in any breed, through they are more common in some dog breeds than others. Beagles, Basenjis, Pekingese, and Airedale terriers are among the main breeds that suffer from hernias the most. Hernias also often occur in puppies. If you have a puppy that is only a few months old or less, make sure you check their belly era often for any signs of a hernia.

How Do I Find My Dog’s Belly Button

Even if a dog’s belly button is flat and hard to notice, it does not mean that it is hard to find. But it is easier to find the belly button of some dogs rather than others.

If you have a particularly furry or long-haired dog, then you may not be able to find their belly button. Owners with a short or light-haired dog will have an easier time.

To find your dog’s belly button, check the area of your dog’s stomach that is below their ribs. The vertical scar will be around the middle of their abdomen where their coat layers. Your best chance for finding their belly button is when you have to provide them with a quality stomach rub.

Besides the threat of hernias, there are no inherent benefits to finding your dog’s belly button. It’s just a fun fact to know and a great way to satiate your curiosity.
